NEET Test Rules and Structure

NEET-UG is a pen-and-paper based test (offline mode) conducted in multiple languages. The exam consists of 200 questions, out of which candidates have to attempt 180 questions, distributed across three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Section A contains 35 compulsory questions, while Section B contains 15 questions, out of which candidates must attempt any 10. The total marks for the exam are 720. Calculators, electronic devices, and study materials are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall. Scoring and Passing Marks in NEET

NEET-UG employs a standardized scoring system. For every correct answer, candidates are awarded +4 marks. For every incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted (-1). The total score is calculated based on the sum of marks obtained. There are no fixed 'passing marks' for NEET-UG in the traditional sense; instead, candidates need to achieve a certain percentile score to be eligible for counseling. The qualifying percentile for the General category is 50th percentile, while for SC/ST/OBC categories, it is 40th percentile, and for PwD candidates, it is 45th percentile. Admission to medical colleges, however, depends on much higher scores, often in the top percentiles, due to intense competition and limited seats. The cutoff ranks for various colleges and categories are released during the counseling process, varying each year based on the difficulty of the paper and the number of applicants.
