For National Merit Scholarship qualification, a Selection Index score is calculated. This index is derived by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing, and Math section scores (each on a scale of 8-38) and then multiplying by a certain factor. Each state has a different Selection Index cutoff score for National Merit Commended Students and Semifinalists. Semifinalists typically represent the top 1% of scorers in each state and have the opportunity to apply for Finalist standing and compete for National Merit Scholarships.
