Paper II: General Ability Test (GAT)

This paper is divided into two parts: Part A (English) and Part B (General Knowledge).

Part A: English This section assesses the candidate's understanding and proficiency in English language. It includes:

• Grammar and Usage: Spotting errors, sentence improvement, sentence completion.
• Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases.
• Comprehension: Reading passages and answering questions.
• Cohesion and Extension: Ordering of words/sentences.

Part B: General Knowledge This is a vast section covering various subjects to test general awareness.

• Physics: Properties of matter, mechanics, heat, light, electricity, magnetism, modern physics.
• Chemistry: Physical and chemical changes, elements, mixtures, compounds, laws of chemical combination, properties of gases, atomic structure, acids, bases, salts, carbon and its compounds.
• General Science: Biology, basic knowledge of human body, common diseases, food and nutrition, environment.
• History, Freedom Movement, etc.: Broad survey of Indian History, Culture, Civilization; Freedom Movement; Elementary study of Indian Constitution and Administration; Panchayati Raj; India and the World; Current Affairs.
• Geography: Earth as a planet, climate, atmosphere, oceans, India's physical features, agriculture, industries, natural resources.
• Current Events: Important events that have happened in India in recent years, current important world events, prominent personalities.

Test Rules and Regulations

To ensure a fair and standardized testing environment, candidates must adhere to specific rules:

1. Arrive at the examination center well before the scheduled start time.
2. Carry your admit card and a valid photo ID proof.
3. No electronic gadgets (mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators) are allowed inside the examination hall.
4. Only black ballpoint pens are to be used for marking answers on the OMR sheet.
5. Do not carry any study material, notes, or chits.
6. Maintain silence and decorum throughout the examination.
7. Any form of malpractice or unfair means will lead to immediate disqualification.
8. Candidates are not allowed to leave the examination hall before the stipulated time ends.
9. Rough work should be done only in the space provided in the question booklet.
10. Follow all instructions given by the invigilator.

Scoring and Negative Marking

The NDA & NA Exam employs a rigorous scoring system, including negative marking, which makes accuracy crucial. For the Mathematics paper, there are 120 questions, each carrying 2.5 marks, totaling 300 marks. For the GAT paper, there are 150 questions, each carrying 4 marks, totaling 600 marks. The total marks for the written exam are 900.

Negative Marking: For every incorrect answer, 1/3rd of the marks allotted to that question will be deducted. Unattempted questions do not attract any penalty. There are no sectional cut-offs in the written exam, but candidates must achieve minimum qualifying marks in each paper as decided by UPSC.
